The Australian Heritage Homes team is passionate about the interior and exterior of your dream home. We love perusing the trade publications, attending events and learning from our peers about who is doing what in the garden this summer, and what paint colours everyone is “oo-ing” and “aah-ing” about. We’ll get to paint colours later, today kicks off a series of posts about the flora. So, what do the experts see as popular trends? Today, it’s rock gardens. Rock gardens are a multi-faceted solution all year-round, for many different types of personalities. For those unfamiliar, they are just as they sound—comprised of small pebbles, medium-sized rocks and boulders. Let’s take a look at some of the many benefits:
Rock gardens don’t depreciate in value
Or aesthetic for that matter. Whether you’re checking out the calendar in February or October, your rock garden will look great. The key here is to mix things up—add in low-maintenance plants and flowers sparingly, but do so to provide whatever pops of colour add joy to your life.
They make everything look more spacious
No, really…we’re not kidding. Call in whatever optical illusionists you please, but rock gardens require fewer plants than you would normally see in a traditional garden. Even smaller rocks in spaces that seem empty fill in the blanks without overwhelming your garden. Genius, right?
They’re low-maintenance
There are none of the complex routines associated with some flowers or plants. If you have a busy daily schedule and can’t afford to spend hours perfecting the layout, (and power to you if you can!) rock gardens may be the perfect solution for you. You don’t even need to water or weed. Instead, make sure that the key players are rocks and cacti.
Rock gardens are an easy way to get creative
We know that there is no trend that will please everyone. But we always encourage our valued customers to try something new. This is probably one of the easiest ways to do so. And if after a couple of weeks or months, you decide that it’s not what you were looking for, it’s very easy to remove the rock garden, and embark on your next landscaping adventure.
Your neighbourhood’s climate doesn’t matter
Well, it matters, but not when it comes to rock gardens. Come intense sun, come long droughts, even hurricane-level winds – none of the above would matter. Your rock garden is made up of components that are weatherproof 365 days a year.
